Anna Hazare’s Arrest : NHRC issues Notice to Home Secretary and Delhi Police Commissioner

NHRC ( National Human Rights Commission ) Issues Notice on Hazare’s Arrest

The National Human Rights Commission Tuesday issued notices to the home secretary and Delhi Police commissioner over the arrest of social activist Anna Hazare.
An NHRC spokesperson told IANS that the secretary and police commissioner have been asked the reason for arresting Hazare.

“They have been asked why Anna Hazare was arrested; it was a peaceful protest, no violence was involved,” the spokesperson said.

The NHRC has given them two weeks’ time to respond to the notice.
The spokesperson added that the notice was given on the basis of a complaint received by the commission. The NHRC notice came on Tuesday evening after it received a complaint from a human rights activist Anirudhasudhan Chakraborty, who alleged that provisions of Constitution and international human rights conventions were violated in the police action against Mr. Hazare and his supporters.

“The Commission received a complaint regarding the preventive action against Hazare. The complainant claimed that Hazare and his supporters were to stage a peaceful protest and action has been taken against them,” an NHRC spokesperson said.

“The NHRC has asked Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh and Delhi Police Commissioner B.K. Gupta to submit a report about the action taken against Hazare and others within two weeks,” the spokesperson said.

Mr. Hazare and his seven supporters, including activists Arvind Kejriwal and Manish Sisodia, were placed under preventive arrest on Tuesday morning after the Gandhian announced that he would defy prohibitory orders to stage a protest at Jai Prakash Narain Park in New Delhi.
